I would hardly count it as definitive but what I had in mind as the distinction was whether it was a story of an otherworld or not. Stories of otherworlds being myths, stories of the middle world being folk tales. Also if it pertains to the main religion of the area then its Mythology and a matter for Godi and priests rather than just for campfire entertainment.

Of course stories of long-since-abandoned religions may also continue in much-modified form as folk tales, so I'm not going to try to formulate a perfect rule for what is or is not a folk tale.
