Let me note that I do not believe that I understand transcendance (whether Gloranthan or not) - but I know enough about it to manipulate it as a symbol. For me, it is kind of like mathematics: I do not understand infinity. I can attempt to understand countably infinite but I know I cannot even approach uncountably infinite. And yet, I am still able to do some symbolic manipulation of either.
