It would - and my rusty knowledge of Latin suggests that it's the same word as "anima" anyway, just a different case ending.

I like this bit of the Wikipedia entry:
"The Latin root of animus is cognate with Greek anemos (wind), breath and is cognate with aniti he breathes."
