Same etymology, different but related word.

From my Latin dictionary:

anima, f, wind, air; breath; life; soul, mind; ghost, spirit.

animus, m, mind, soul; consciousness; reason, thought, opinion, imagination; heart, feelings, disposition; courage, spirit, pride, passion; will, purpose; term of endearment.

Which suggests that the problem with Latin is that the language has such a small vocabulary, that each word has to do service with about a dozen different meanings. Kind of the opposite of English where every meaning has a dozen words for it...
