It might be worth taking a look at the stuff Greg and I posted on this subject in the last month from the soon-to-be-published Orlanthi Unfinished Work (which has a lot of material on Esrolia) on the Heroquest-RPG list. However, in a nutshell, the ancestors of the Esrolians were once a Vingkotling clan called the Kodigvari (the royal clan of the Vingkotlings). When the Kodigvari royal house was destroyed as a result of the Sword and Helm saga and the Last Royal Betrayal, the widowed grandmothers seized power "for their own protection". That is the origin of the Esrolian matriarchy.
Greg and I would be happy to answer questions, further comment, whatever, on the Heroquest-RPG list, but we are trying to avoid splitting these discussions on two lists.
