Not sure what you mean by "Conan-esque", but magic in HOTT is abstract: it's up to you to assign the appropriate troop type and colourful description. "Magician" isn't always right when almost all your troops use magic, you need to look at the effect and map that to numbers. So for instance the only unit I have classified as "artillery" are actually using javelins. Mile Throw Javelins. It's rather like using HQ: that "+2 augment" is simple mechanically, but the narration that makes it fun is up to you.
