I used it because it was an instance of the word "hoplite" being used in a text that I'd read.
I suppose its essentially a preference thing, but I prefer slightly more granularity in troop types than HOTT offers. I think there should be some kind of difference between disciplined perfectionist armoured spearmen and the javelin and spear armed hillmen militia. YG(Simulation)WV! :)

Illyrians typically had smaller shields, less serious armour, and a few javelins and wouldn't "lock" themselves into a tight formation.
