The reason foreign mercenaries were considered such a good choice as
bodyguards
was that, despite the bad reputation of mercenaries generaly, they realy had
no other
choice but to be loyal.
Being foreigners they had absolutely no friends whatsoever. They has
possitions of
importance and even wealth, so locals would be envious and resentful of
them,
and they were solely reliant on their employer for support and even legal
protection.
They were on to a good thing, had nowhere else to go, and had no other local
loyalties or biases. Most of them might not even speak the local language.
