The wording is actually "armoured archer/guards". I'd interpret that as a mixed unit of spearmen and archers. You need some distance weaponry against enemy flyers or archers who would otherwise attack the magicans over the heads of the guards.
In any case if you're involved in a big magical ritual you don't want to break off and deal with a local threat. The magical backlash from an interrupted ritual could involve the loss of all the magicans involved.
