Hi all, long nights have passed since I have decided to change my career....
I have forgotten many things, including many Glorantha Lores. (Sigh)
I don't have Heroes of Wisdom, so some phrases in Peter Metcalfe's timeline
of DP is unknown for me.
http://www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~BLUEMAGI/TimelineDragonPass.htm
*Malani Humakti.....are they typical humakti?
As you know, they are villains from POV of Colymar Varmandi (we are good
Orlanthi, they are bad Humakti) and Lismelder Humakti (We are honorable
undead hunters, they are heartless killers among peaceful people). Of course
I don't want to change their POV, but their self-justification and attitude
toward outside is something I want to examine...
IMG, teaching of Isolting Humakti is somewhat different from Indrodari Humakti (More orthodox from pov of player character type, say, honorable) and whole Humakt cult has a sort of broader sense of tolerance to eccentricity like the attitude toward "Oofmarthan", a guardian being of Temple of Wooden Sword (they believe in an entity of aldryami pantheon "Taker"...)
(It seems that Malani Humakti justify personal ambition to power and authoirty and it can be compatible with "Honor and Truth" among them, it might mean that Humakt is still young among the Storm Brothers before he cut off himself from Storm Pantheon, making terrible oath and resheathed as a weaponthane... He is still not dead of passion and not found the Death.)
*Historical Summary of Malani Tribe
Malani people is very warlike as you can read in Barbarian Adventures p.8,
and their history has been likely full of bloody war, sometimes including
kinstrife and a burst of madness temper inherited from Mad Blood himself.
#Mad Blood War (Lismelder Split and Varmandi war) Around 1350-1356 ST
*King Mad Blood Malan (1st -1356?)
David Dunham's site and Jeff Richard's script mentioned some about Malani
villains how they killed good Orlanthi kin and ignored sacred kinship with
their excuse "we are humakti, we are different from you"... As far as I read
Varmandi campaign, around 1300s, Malani already held as a sort of tribal
body topped with their bandit king Mad Blood Malan (See Enclosure #1) At
that time, Varmandi was not among Colymar Tribe (for they wrong-sided with
"Usurper" Borngold) and an independent clan giving tribute to Malani.
I am not sure it is official but he was killed by the Black Spear thrown by the Colymar King in David's Site and Martin Laurie's script.
Malan's famous bad temper became an inherited nature of tribe when Mad Blood Malan was set as a tribal wyter in Two Ridge Fort Magical Circumstance, I don't know how such can be even if his Power is feared and respected beyond his "holy" madness. And I don't know why he was called "Silver Boar" in Dragon Pass p.57.
*King Erland Kinslayer (2nd 1356-1362)
See Martin Laurie's LARP script. Kinstrife between Erland and Lismelder is
well-known (See Tales of Reaching Moon #18 and #19). In Korol's Saga, he
died in Tarsh in the Battle of Falling Hill.
*King Baranwolf (3rd 1362- )
Korol's Saga ended (continued but not put on David's site?) during his
reign. I don't know Varmandi could pay off old scores toward Orleving
(Malani) during the campaign.
#Zarran War (Again With Colymar and Varmandi) Around 1410-1428 ST Varmandi allied with Hiording (Colymar Tribe), attacking Hyaloring Triarchy (this is Taral War), Colymar King intervened and helped Varmandi to take back Ormthane Valley from Malani Tribe, I don't know detail of it and it seems that Varmandi failed to recover lost land, but Antorling, Namolding and Lysang of Arfritha Valley joined Colymar after that, (so it might be Alsace-Lorraine line between Malani and Colymar...bad parallel? See below about Starbrow Rebellion.) So it is good for total Colymar and bad for Malani.
So Malani was defeated in South and sought another direction to fight and conquest, to east.
#Arsgol War (Against Culbrea) 1432-1436 ST? [I don't know any famous Malani names during this time.] [In the war against the Yrstad and the Goodhaven [Culbrea], the Arsgol clan retreats to its original highland stronghold around one of Orlanth's hills. Kartol Arsgolsson asks for aid against the Malani Tribe. King Horvard Bearkiller accepts the Arsgol into the Malani and then defeats the Yrstad and Goodhaven clans....(Peter's timeline).] I am not sure relation between this "Yrstad" and Ystrad household in Ye Booke of Tentacles #2 p.43,p.54, it might mean that Yrstad was weakened by Malani and absorbed to Goodhaven Clan as a mere household.
#Telmori War and Hauberk Jon 1472-1481 ST Telmori hsunchen came and troubles happened for cultural gap and for depavity of livestocks until Sartar came. Hauberk Jon was famous character of Malani during that time and he became the wyter of Jonstown after that, he is from Arsgol clan, not from mad blood Isolting, so it might helped Sartar to make peace.
*King Hauberk Jon 1483-1497 ST (Good King of Malani under tutelage of
Sartar)
#Civil War in Malani? 1498?-1550?
[The Arsgol clan rejects the new Malani King and chose Janyr Jonsson as clan
leader which makes him Earl. This angers the other confederated
tribes....The confederated tribes of Jonstown depose the Arsgol clan by
forming the Jonstown Confederation.]
[Three Malani clans help Queen Umathkar Orldagsdotter of the Colymar to kill
the Malani King. ]
(As you find some resemblance in an episode in KODP, clanmen under mad
chieftain asked player clan to kill their own chieftain in a raid....)
It might mean battle between newcomers and indigenous people (madness infected) of Malani, or Arsgol and Isolting. I don't know whether Hauberk Jon was Humakti or not.
#Against Moon -1602 ST
Malani fought Lunar Empire under Sartar Kingdom until Salinarg and Household
of Death was destroyed,
But during that time, the tradition of Humakti Kings started (it might mean "mad" chieftains and kings if they are influenced by Tribal Wyter). It is advantage for this century for Lunars dislike Orlanthi kings...
#Starbrow Rebellion 1616 ST
{*Sarostip Coldeye} renounced from Sartar High Council and for this, Malani
made its advantage against Colymar, they got back Namolding and Lysang from
Colymar for they didn't side with the rebellion.
*King Edruf Strongbreath
It seems he was an Orlanthi, not Humakti in LARP, but it might not be
official.....I don't know the reason of his retirement or death.
*Queen Amalda Edrufsdotter
Current Queen of Tribe, she is Humakti.
#Clans of Malani
In Very Auld Document (13 years have passed...) of Joerg:
http://members.tripod.com/~insley/glorantha-v1/0040.html
In this document, before Starbrow Rebellion, malani held 6 clans: Arsgol,
Bluefox, Isortling, Pant, Orleving (one more clan should be listed, but not
appeared in this list for unknown reason.) If Isortling = Isolting, it is
reasonable and each clan has 1500-2000 members.
