The old RQ "everything was a god" includes deities such as Waha, Thed and Pamalt who are definitely spirits. Wyrms Footprint is useful in that it contains a tripartite division of divinities as being a combination of wisdom, waters and spirit.
The deities - Magasta, Sshorg, Wachaza and Lorion - are a combination of wisdom and spirit and hence theistic entities. The watery ancestors - Veredth, Mirintha, Murthdrya and Tholania are a combination of wisdom and waters and thus animistic deities. Although not stated in Missing Lands, it seems to me that the actual seas themselves are a combination of waters and spirit and hence worshippable as essenses.
This does have the problem that Heler, a god, is cited as a watery ancestor and hence an animistic deity to begin with. I suppose one could explain this as Heler undergoing massive metaphysical changes when Orlanth made him his bitch but I prefer to assume that the best classification schemes have holes in them.
The ancient deities, because they are outside the first entities scheme, can be worshipped in whatever form necessary as they are really m-word divinities.
