AFAIK the Hydra was summoned by the city of Carantes to repel a besieging lunar army in the zero wane. The lunars found their chaos magics were unable to control it so the army ran. However the hungry Hydra then devoured the city of Carantes, which was later resettled from elsewhere. The lunars then hushed up the circumstances of their defeat.

So this leaves the following questions unresolved:

  1. How did Carantes come to have Hydra summoning (or creating) magics? My suspicion is that the secrets were left over from the widespread diffusion of magics during the Imperial Age as there's little in Carantes' prehistory to suggest any expertise with Hydras.
  2. How did the Hydra get to the Hydra Hills?
  3. Why were the Lunars unable to control the Hydra? The whole event is portrayed as a weakness in the Lunar Way according to the Redline history (with the actual description being in the Genertela Book). The Pamaltelan origin of the Hydra may be the reason.
