I always figured that the references to five genders of dragonewts were just
another way of viewing the 5 different forms/castes/stages. After all, some
"logical" wizards may look at the frills and such of the higher stage
dragonewts, and look to other animals, where displaying plays a large part
in the male mating rituals, and figure that dragonewts may act in a similar
fashion.
(For an interesting idea for the Ralian 'newts. Maybe without the king, the stages have begun to break down, so you'll find otherwise normal tailed priests with a scout's crest. Or a warrior with the wings of a ruler. In essense, the Inhuman king kept the cycles of reincarnation going through in the right order, and without one, all the newt's past (and future) lives are beginning to blend together)
