I remember reading something recently that suggested the source of the "pyramid scheme" analogy, The idea was that the only people benefiting from the EWF were those at the top of the pyramid, The lower ranks existed merely to allow the upper ranks to gain their benefits and keep their plan in motion with no real benefits (or at least with less benefits compared to what they put into the EWF),'

Whether this fits with the more recent "revelations" I don't know.
