I had considered the same thing for an adaptation of HeroQuest to the Nephilim game. i.e. that one distinguishing feature between Nephilim and mortals is that Nephs have and can accumulate Hero points and are able to expend them to power magical effects, using slightly modified HP bump rules.
I think it's a neat approach.
