Isn't that using Water to defeat Fire, though? That also fits the standard Elemental Progression better than Darkness Defeating Fire. It is still Fire being vanquished, just not by the element that it normally defeats (not that I would tell the trolls that, of course, valuing my life more than always being right :-).

Now, if some holleri can create "dry ice" by freezing the air, and *that* was used as a fire extinguisher, it *would* be the Dark/Cold Defeating Light/Fire component that the original trolls desired.
