Hmm... what's wrong with high freqency sonar, like that used by bats? It actually works in air, and the resolution is excellent. If darksense is low frequensy sonar, the trolls are half blind. The higher the frequensy, the better the resolution. I can check out resolutions for infrasound, but it won't be good...
As for whale like communication. Urgh.. I at least wouldn't go there. The trolls are a nicely detailed bunch, and I'd hate to fiddle with them like that at this stage. No doubt they can use sonar tactically, "painting" targets for other trolls without humans ever knowing about it, for instance.
