Catching up...

It seems odd to me that nobody has mentioned the Orlanthi Quest which
defines Orlanth's "independence" more than any other could possibly

   The Emperor-slaying and the Lightbringers' Quest

Orlanth begins these stories as a barbarian and ends as the king of
the world. Certainly there is plenty in these stories to make an
Orlanthi independent.
