It is also possible to find small statues of Pavis, that, when placed on a flat surface, spin so his outstretched arm points toward the city. They are, of course, totally useless in Pavis.
Personally, I have always assumed that Gloranthan compasses work much the same way as ours, and that the compass directions are the same. It may not be particularly authentic, but it's easy to remember. I find that my players and I have enough trouble remembering the days of the week without also having to recall a different compass rose!
