Paul Chapman disagrees, re: languages in matrices
:!!!!!! This assumes that magic follows principles akin to those of
:technology in both cases, which I strongly dispute! I'm all for magical
:objects doing all sorts of things... it's more mystical. I really think
:we shouldn't limit Glorantha by game constructs... it's awfully
I _do_ agree that it's possible to create magical items which give you the
ability to get language knowledge/translation -- I believe there's at
least one written up in Plunder. I agree with you in terms of "magic
items" able to do many amazing things.
But I don't think that _matrices_ (which in RQ terms are fairly cheap, low
level magic, after all) have some amazing ability to store all kinds of
knowledge and information beyond battle magic spells -- as suggested in
the original post. I could see putting some power in and having a
matrix (modified) singing "Mary's Little Lamb" instead of a battle
magic spell, or giving one of 10 wise sayings about how to plant your
corn, or something, but not stuffing the Encyclopedia Gloranthica on one
(possible to do on a magical item-- but not on a matrix, IMO). Maybe if
you used a couple thousand enchants, or something...
If you want to store large amounts of information for ready access, that's
what cult spirits are for. Or Heroquests of the appropriate Lhankor Mhy
type. Or Sever Head. Or books...
