The mysterious Mr. Trotsky (hey - aren't you supposed to be dead in

Since my suspicions about the relationship between Hwarin Dalthippa
and the Syllilan "Orlanth" cult are similar to the Orlanth Bridegroom
issue (although I don't think that the Lunars have any heroquesters
capable of softening the attitudes of the Sartarite-Hendriki "Orlanth"
cult towards the Red Goddess), I'll throw out a response.

Mainly, the Red Goddess never pledged to destroy the Heortling god
Orlanth. Period. The ire of the Red Goddess and her followers were
not directed to the kingdoms of southern Peloria (rampant Orlanth
worshippers), but against Carmania. Even though Greg is still working

on the legendary "Lunar Book", the Fortunate Succession (still
available through Wizard's Attic as far as I know) gives more material
on the Red Goddess and the Red Emperor (albeit from a Dara Happan POV)
than any of the old published material.

The ire of the Orlanth cults against the Red Goddess is based on three
things: 1) her followers are willing to use "Chaos" against her foes;
2) her client kings trample on the traditional rights of the local
chiefs and priests; and 3) most Heortlings really hate paying tribute
to anyone. Making matters worse is the cultural confusion between the
largely Dara Happan-Carmanian Lunar Heartlands and the clan and tribal
structure of the Heortling Orlanthi.

>2) What would a cult of Orlanth Bridegroom be able to acheive that
the
>already existent Cult of the Seven Mothers cannot?

The cooperation and support of the rural clans, which make up the vast
majority of the population. The Seven Mothers may be popular in
Furthest and in the trade towns, but most of the population of the
Provinces (Aggar, Holay, Tarsh) are still worshipping Orlanth and
Ernalda. The Empire may have suppressed the Warrior and Lightbringer
cults, but they are not too difficult to resurrect. If Hwarin
Dalthippa married the Red Goddess to the local Orlanth cult in
Syllila, it would help explain the stead-fast loyalty of the Syllilans
to the Red Goddess. Indeed, during Sheng's occupation, Syllila was
one of the few lands that continued to worship the Goddess instead of
his Nomad Nastiness.

I hate to be picky but an Anglo-Saxon hide ranged from 40-120 acres.
Furthermore, an Anglo-Saxon acre was not a fixed land area but
represented the amount of land a team could plough in one day.

I think David's web-page (a true work of Mastery!) still has my entry
called "Heorl's Questions" that deal with some of these issues.
