Erik writes an excellent piece on dwarfs' Purposes and Hobbies.

To summarise:

THE LAWS OF MOSTAL

1. A Mostali must not harm the World Machine, or, through inaction, allow
the World Machine to come to harm.

2. A Mostali must obey the general conditioning of his caste, except where
this conflicts with the First Law of Mostal.

3. A Mostali must act in accordance with his specific purpose, except where
this conflicts with the First and Second Laws of Mostal.

Crude, I know, but Uncle Isaac got plenty of plots out of these! :-)
