       According to the Encyclopaedia of Social and Cultural Anthropology (ed.
A Barnard & J Spencer, 1998) it means marriage within the same class or
ethnic group, but excluding kin and affines - sort of a weak endogamy, I
suppose. Apparently a good description of many modern western marriage
practices. It's obviously not a very common term (possibly not a formal one
FAIK), as its hidden in the 'marriage' section, rather than getting its own
entry like 'exogamy' and 'endogamy' do.
