The approach I took in the New Hrestoli Idealist Church writeup (Tales #13)
was to make the ordinary foot-soldiers (grunts) a halfway house: they're
"farmers" who have taken their first step onto the Idealist path (upward
progression through the social classes) but who are not (yet?) Knights.
