At Glorantha Con IV, Sandy Peterson talked about the Baths of Nelat, and described it as being terribly difficult. Orlanth survived, but was different when he came out. Harmast substituted a 'Purification by Fire' ritual; it was implied that this was because the Baths of Nelat was not something he thought he could accomplish/survive.
Of course, everybody who attempts the LBQ these days does it the traditional way; you know, the way Great Harmast did.
