I've come across the idea before, that this was a deliberate defensive strategy. I'm pretty sure that it's mentioned in passing, in some of the Roman annals, although of course interpretation of such brief remarks is a dodgy business (aristotles claw being a case in point).             Received on Tue 07 Aug 2001 - 04:19:02 EEST
