The tattoo should be part of that connection (hence the suggestion that Lokamayaton hid his tattoos is a suggestion that he is ashamed on and rejects his clan and society) but I don't think it's the whole thing. Just because you hold a Black Oak down and abrade him with steel wool doesn't mean that he's no longer a Black Oak.... It's a badge, a mark, an advertisement as much as a magical talisman.
