Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy is too my mind a great contemporary HeroQuest (lords above they cross to the other side, enter the lands of the dead, witness the death of god) and a fine novel too boot. If you have not read it then I would rectify that omission as soon as you can (and to my mind its themes are far too complex for it to be labeled a children's book).

However it is probably 21st century so excluded from competition with the afore mentioned ;-)
