Yes, but if someone DID have a mastery advantage, or at any rate managed a Major/Complete victory, that would virtually end the contest in one exchange - and the situation gets worse with higher Ability Ratings, since halving them loses you more! No matter how may AP you have, halving your Ability Rating means you'll be doing a lot of failing from then on.

It is probably more realistic, but less heroic.
