It strikes me that people mainly fear sorcerers because they represent frightening power with no discernable alliegence or control. A priestess might have 57 points of divine magic, but those runes on her hemline give you a clue as to her intent. And to aquire that power, she has (most probably) been behaving according to the values of her deity. A ZZ Death Lord may be a nasty menace, but at least he's nasty in predictable ways. Sorcerer "x" is Gloranthan equivalent to that guy on the street corner with an Uzi in one hand and a rubber duckie in the other.
