Herewith I make my bid for the title of obnoxious pedant! Bryan's piece is wrong in one important respect. In 19th century Great Britain, the question was not the disestablishment of the English Church, but of the IRISH church! The Liberals were in favor of ending the establishment of the (Episcopal) Church in Ireland; the Tories against. In the early 20th century the same split occurred again over the question of dis- establishing the Welsh Church. So at the present time, the position in Great Britain is as follows: the Episcopal Church is established in England, the Presbyterians in Scotland, and there is no established church in Wales and Northern Ireland.
