Just last month I found a copy of the 2d ed. rulebook at a local store.
IMHO the fundamental difference between the two editions is that
where the 3d edition is busy constructing elaborate grand unified
theories, the 2d edition just gives you clear guidelines. Examples are
the character creation systems, the skill improvement systems, the armor
rules. In each of these instances, the 3d edition is extremely compli-
cated, not very useful, and has a strong generic odor about it. The
2d edition equivalents were more limited, but are a lot easier to use,
and the results are much more directly useful in a game.
