Well, if you're Malkioni, it's pretty obvious - the Invisible God. If not,
whatever God or framework you fit into.
For athiests (and therefore, kind of for everybody else on one level or
another), you are establishing a strict regimentation of your life, and that
structure increases your conrol in other areas. Also, sacrifice tends to make
permanent changes to this world - sacrificing something in an established way
leads to a demonstrated improvement...
C.S. Friedman's "When True Night Falls" series builds a nice connection between
sacrifice and effect.
