Stead Builders

I have closed the poll: if anyone has not voted and wishes to join a subgroup, please mail a message to the main group.

We have a good spread of interests: only the songs and poems have a single person (Otto), and this is a topic that will be easier and clearer to work on later, when we have a clearer basic picture of the stead.

We seem to have learnt two things in the first week - that we have a bunch of creative people with lots of good ideas, and that there are a large number of issues to come up - probably more than one person can attend to. The subgroups should allow us to progress fairly quickly.

Can I ask that you contact the other people in your interest group and organise between yourselves how you will work and split responsibilities. You may wish to use private email for the smaller groups: if you use this Stormstead group can I ask that you clearly label your subgroup (upper case headers below) in the heading of each post (OVERVIEW, MAP, RING etc.). There is an understanding that while other list members not in the subgroup may read the posts, they will not comment *at this stage*.

A few basic thoughts:

• Our first stead is small, approximately 40 adults and a traveling hero band. (Overview group please confirm this as early as possible). Bryan has placed an initial map in the files area.
• Please keep references generic. You may have a notional idea of where the stead is (for example a Kheldon stead in the Long Doe Hills), but keep externals generic - "five miles south to the chief's stead", "the River", "the main road". Use generic names for bloodlines etc. - "The Black Oaks", "The Wind Spears", that can be changed by narrators to fit their own campaigns.
• Don't be afraid of duplicating resources- even if material is not used at this stage, it almost certainly will be in future steads or in plug-in modules.
• There will obviously be some tweaking and editing of material to match our separate visions, once we compare what we have created. Be aware of this, but otherwise trust your creativity. If you really get stuck, post a note to the group or ask Bryan (bethexton@yahoo.com) , whose vision and family history we are raiding for the first stead.
• FRAMEWORK & STRUCTURE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN DETAIL. We don't have to name every person in the stead, for instance - this is something we could easily open to the Hero Wars list and seek characters, names and skills from existing campaigns. What we do need is a definite idea of the numbers, bloodlines and occupations of the stead inhabitants. Endless detail can follow later.

• This is our first attempt at working in a group, so we'll be learning a lot about how to best work together and how best to present the data we create. Rather than set a deadline, at this stage I propose we ask for a progress report next Monday 4 March.
• The aim is to produce campaign resources that can be easily utilised by most narrators. Please distinguish between GAG (generally accepted Glorantha) and interesting new ideas or unusual takes that will be best presented in a specialty 'plug-in' module. We don't have to reinvent the wheel here, though there will be a number of issues we need to clarify.
• I am hoping to use a number of Javascripts to generate unique names and abilities for narrators who wish a unique stead and clan based on our general outlines. So please create a number of variants whenever this is feasible. For example, we will have a named chief, with stats for a particular cult. We can also present a javascript that generates the chief's name, cult, epithet, cult and skills from an array of possibilities. So as well as a default chief, we should provide a secondary listing of alternative epithets and cults/cult skills.
