My Iranian friend told me all about the Zoroastrian side of things in Iran. I got the strong impression that he felt much more of a link with that than with Islam, despite being Muslim. Fair bit of pride in the country's history, not necessarily the more recent history.

He and his family were just like a whole load of (Mediterranean) Europeans I know. Islam and modern Iran overlaid upon that.
