In my opinion it's always a mistake to take this sort of thing too far. It can be handy at times -- the Orlanthi barbarians aren't Vikings, but if you need to know something about them that you don't remember/hasn't been written, you can use a Viking analog. But Orlanth is not Thor. You can't extrapolate everything.
