I'd say it is more than poignant. IMG, the Heortlings view the Householf of Death as a tragedy and a horrible perversion (but maybe a necessary one). Orlanth and Ernalda are about life. Being chosen by Humakt is a last resort for those beyond hope, the lost cases, the already dead. Children are the future of the clan, the continuation of life.
