As I see it, paying wergild is an honorable course of action after you've done something wrong; it's a way to correct the bad thing you did. (Mistakes are made, and fixed.)

But publicly confessing that you did something wrong, when, in fact, you *didn't* do something wrong--and then even paying "restitution" for something that you were supposed to do in the first place--and doing all of that because you're afraid of a fight?
