Thinking about this further, I note that the Genertela boxed set map (the fold-out one, not the one on p7), gives the Lunar Empire as, very approximately, 1000 x 1000 *km*. If that was supposed to be miles, that's a very large source of the error right there. Later maps have shown it smaller still, but the lion's share of the discrepancy would be due to that.
