Chapter 1
Escorting Ducks

The first adventure of Notus von Burmschtohl was escorting ducks from Stone Nest Ruins in Duckvalley to Stagwood (The adventure was taken from RQA#1, Escape from Duckland). The ducks had the red feather pest and had get to Stagwood in one week to be cured or they would die. First the party consisting of Notus, Gustaff, Tokk and Torgar had to go to Apple Lane to meet a Quackjohn, their contact and guide. They went and met Quackjohn in Apple Lane. Notus got into trouble already in Apple Lane. There were some Lunars, who sold permits to travel further from Apple Lane. Notus said he would not buy such papers from them. The Lunars then attacked Notus and one spear hit him in the leg but he got away. The Lunars then questioned the others but they said they did not know Notus. They also said that Notus came from Prax something like that. Even his name they kept hidden and told a false name to the Lunars. After the questioning Notus was declared as an outlaw. Meanwhile Notus was in the forest just outside Apple Lane. He had to find a place to make camp. In the evening Quackjohn came to the inn and talked with the others. He went in the night out to the forest to find Notus. It did not take very long for Quackjohn to find Notus. He then told what he had told the others in the inn.
In the morning they all five started their journey to the Stone Nest Ruins. On the way from Apple Lane they met two Orlanthis and warned them about the Lunars. They got a hint that they should take the way through Starfire Ridge and headed south to the mountains. In the evening they came to Tarndisi's Grove where they had planned to make camp and a fire. Just when they were about to ignite the fire, a man appeared and told them not to do it, because of what had happened there a long, long time ago. They moved their camp a few kilometers and made then camp. They invited the man on supper. He told the sad story of Tarndisi and how the grove was burnt as it is half burnt where plants will never grove again. To thank for the meals he told the next morning a shortcut through the mountains with much easier climbs. Even then it was hard climbs and Tokk was really close of falling down, but he just got hold of a stone when he was falling down. In the valley, called Big Elm Valley, on the other side of the ridge was the home village, Grey Dog Village, of Notus and Torgar. Before they went into the village they went to the Humakt shrine nearby to pray there. In the village they went to the inn and stayed overnight there. They sat in the evening and talked to the people and got to know that almost every man of the clan was on an act of vengeance against the Poss clan. The Poss clan had been destroying the harvest and needed a lesson.
Early in the morning they woke up of a horrible noise and jumped up. Then they took their weapons and ran out. It was an ox that was injured, but luckily Notus managed to heal the wound with his magic. They then looked at the wounds and saw that they were made by Jack O'Bears. Notus and Torgar decided that they will find and kill the Jack O'Bears because this is their clan land. The others of the party wanted to follow and kill the Jack O'Bears as you would expect from chaos hating Storm Bulls. Tokk managed to find and track the tracks of the ox and after an hour they came to a tree. There Gustaff's leg started to ache just the way it does when there is chaos nearby. When they looked around, Notus saw a Jack O'Bear in the tree. It attacked immediately. Notus managed to attack it just once before its chaotic ability harmonized Notus. At the same moment another Jack O'Bear jumped down from the tree. It was the first Jack O'Bears female companion, who joined the fight to get a fine meal of the party. It was Gustaff and Torgar who killed the monsters, while for Tokk all went wrong and he almost got killed. The party took the bodies to the village burnt them there. They were celebrated as heroes with a feast with lots of food and drink.
When they left the village and continued the journey they came to the big elm tree, of which the valley was known, and saw there two humanoids. One of them wore a blue cloak. When they came closer to the men, they saw to their horror, that one of them was not a man but a broo, Ugla Khan. Tokk charged on his horse immediately when he saw it was a broo. The man in the blue cloak saw that the party would attack and shouted for help. Three broos came running from the woods. He himself started to flee. Tokk tried to hit Ugla with his lance but missed, but Ugla did not miss and hit Tokk in the abdom. Tokk fell down mortally wounded. Ugla started to move towards the party with two of the broos. When Quackjohn saw what happened to Tokk, he started to run towards Tokk. Unfortunately he had first to fight the third broo from the woods. Ugla attacked Notus as he reached the party but Notus missed, so Notus right leg was chopped off. Notus made a heroic move and stayed conscious to heal himself, but his healing magic was not powerful enough, so he lost one hit point from the total hit points of his leg. At the same time were Gustaff and Torgar fighting the two broos. Then when Quackjohn came to the last broo, he made a special hit and chopped off the broos leg and it fell unconscious. This way Quackjohn came in time to Tokk and could heal him before he died. Ugla hit Notus and Notus healed himself without doing any damage to Ugla. After a few rounds Notus had used up his magic points. Then he fell unconscious when he could not heal the wounds. Then Quackjohn ran to Notus to heal him instead. Torgar and Gustaff had maimed their enemies, so Ugla fled. Soon the broos were killed. Then everybody was healed and the journey continued. Nothing more happened that night. Double guards were put up as always, but the night was quiet.
Next morning nothing special happened except that the party arrived to the Upland Marsh, a terrible place made by the evil necromancer Delikti. Notus and Torgar had heard horrible stories of the marsh, but they had to go this way in order to come in time to the Stone Nest Ruins. They had to make camp in the marsh. At midnight Notus noticed that everything became unnaturally quiet. He said to Tokk about it and they woke up the rest. Everybody noticed that zombies and skeletons started to come up from the marsh against them. They fought and killed zombies and skeletons but more and more started to appear. Then there came the blood-icing howl from ghouls. Everybody in the party got demoralized and fled. One of the zombies was on a skeleton horse and it followed at the same pace so it had to be killed. Everybody turned around and attacked it. It was a hard fight but in the end it was killed. Afterwards they continued into the marsh. They had lost all their equipment at the first campsite so it became a long and cold night. During the night they had to change campsite a few times but they did not have to fight anymore.
At last when the morning arrived Quackjohn said that they had gone deeper into the marsh than he had wished but that he could find out again from there. Later that day they came to the Stone Nest Ruins and tried to find the ducks. They came out of the ruins only after Notus had said that they were sent to help them and not to care what Torgar says. It was because Torgar insulted the ducks they did not first come out. There became a bitter fight in the party between Notus and Torgar because Notus insulted Torgar because Torgar insulted the ducks. Torgar got angry and started to cast disruptions on Notus. Notus just healed him and did nothing to Torgar. This got him even more mad. When Notus had used up his magic points Quackjohn continued to heal Notus. Then when Torgar saw that Quackjohn healed Notus he said to Quackjohn to stop and not to interfere in their internal fight. Quackjohn said he only heals Notus because Notus made the right thing to get the ducks out of the ruins. Torgar started to threaten Quackjohn but then Tokk said he would use all means to protect Quackjohn. Gustaff tried to make peace but it was in vain and he said he also would defend Quackjohn. When all the ducks were present, Torgar stopped to cast disruptions on Notus and everybody started to walk towards Stagwood. The tense feelings between the two companions continued. Now the party consisted of four men, one healthy male duck, and then the sick ducks, four males, two females and three child ducks. In the evening a camp was made and guards set up. The night was uneventful.
During the next day nothing more happened than a triceratop was seen and had to be avoided by walking round it. Torgar and Gustaff found somekind of plants. Later that day there was somebody singing on the other side of the hill, which they were near. They went to see what there was. It was a duckosaur, who was singing. When it saw the party it wanted them to sing something for it and they tried. Gustaff and Torgar sang really well but for the others singing were poor. After the song it wanted to hear a story. Then the party told the story of Tarndisi they had heard earlier. It was touched by the sad story. Last it asked if they had any tasty plants or herbs to give. Torgar gave the plant he had found during the day. The duckosaur could not take a plant without giving another instead. When they saw the plant Torgar had gotten in exchange, they asked if it wanted to change two more plants. It wanted, so the deal was made. It also told about some old ruins down the river, where they could make camp and about the ford there, so they could cross the river. When they came to the ruins it was getting dark and camp was made.
The following morning when they were about to leave, five tusk riders came. They wanted to have duck for breakfast. The party did not agree so there was a fight. Tokk tried again to use his lance, now against the leader, Bolgor Badbreath, but he missed. Three of the tusk riders attacked Gustaff, Notus and Torgar. Notus hit a critical hit on one of the tusk riders, so a leg was cut off and the tusk rider fell unconscious. When Tokk and Bolgor made their next attacks, Tokk missed but Bolgor did not. Tokk was hit again deadly in the abdom. Quackjohn had once more to go and rescue Tokk. Bolgor saw that Notus had killed his enemy and charged. After a few rounds Notus missed his parry. Again his right leg was cut off. It was Quackjohn who came once more to rescue Notus. Torgar had killed his enemy and went to help Gustaff. Then Torgar fumbled and chopped off Gustaffs leg. And once again Quackjohn had to rescue a member of the party. Both Notus and Gustaff lost one hit point of the total hit points in the leg. The last tusk rider and Bolgor started to attack the ducks, who tried desperately sling stones against them. Torgar continued fighting Gustaffs enemy but it looked really bad for him. He was heavily wounded. Then, like out of the blue sky, came a lightwall between Torgar and the tusk rider. Torgar used this to cast disruptions on Bolgor, so that he would be angry and attack him and not the ducks. The plan worked. Torgar could, thanks to the lightwall, stand and fight against the two enemies. Gustaff could also after a minute come and fight and he killed from behind the tusk rider. Bolgor and the last tusk rider then fled. Tokk and Notus were then healed. It was the duckosaur who had come at the right moment and saved the group of being slain by the tusk riders. They all thanked the duckosaur once more and headed south towards Stagwood. During the day they came to a Sun Dome of Yelmalio and the weather became warmer. Even if Yelmalio and Orlanth or Storm Bull are not friends nothing happened in that area. When the night came, a camp was once more made.
The last day when they would arrive to Stagwood, they saw two people at the road. When they arrived there, more people jumped out of the bushes. It was the blue cloak and Ugla Khan with friends. Quackjohn saw it was Ugla so he readied his heavy crossbow. He then shot Ugla in the chest, so Ugla fell down and could do nothing. Tokk charged once more and this time against a dragonsnail, which had appeared behind a big bush. He hit this time, but its hard shell saved it. On the following attack Tokk made a perfect hit on the head of it and killed the dragonsnail. Unfortunately it had the chaotic ability of exploding when it is killed, so it exploded beside Tokk. Luckily for Tokk, the explosion was so small, so he survived. Meanwhile Notus had run to Ugla and cut off Uglas head. The blue cloak and the rest were ogres. Gustaff and Torgar fought against the ogres. Notus killed one of them but one ogre got away and he said he would revenge his brother's death. This fight went very well without Quackjohn having to heal the party all the time. In the evening they reached Stagwood and it was in time to save the ducks.
The party felt nice to have made such a long journey and saved the lives of the ducks even if there had been hard fights. After the adventure Notus noticed that he had become better in giving first aid, listening, scanning, tracking, and parrying with his shield. The party got a paper on which was written how much training and how much money they would get when they went to Duck Point. They could not get their reward here. In the loot from the dead enemies they found a magic crystal, which could store magic points. Notus carries it because he heals the rest of the group. There were also three iron arrowheads and an ivory hunting horn. They had no idea how much it was worth. The value of the rest was about one thousand Lunars.
